Organizers of the recall effort against California Gov. Gavin Newsom collected enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.

The California secretary of state’s office announced Monday that more than 1.6 million signatures had been verified, about 100,000 more than needed to force a vote on the first-term Democrat.

An election is likely to take place in the fall where voters would face two questions: Should Newsom be recalled and who should replace him? The votes on the second question will only be counted if more than half say yes to the first.

Recall signers expressed varied reasons for wanting to remove the governor.

The original petition, filed in February 2020, notes concerns about Newsom’s leftist policies on immigration and his failure to alleviate the state’s growing homelessness problem.

But Newsom has also faced vitriol over the past year for his policies surrounding the pandemic. His decision to issue stay-at-home orders, restrict business activity, and halt indoor church gathering have angered conservatives up and down the state. Although the movement is largely backed by Republicans, about one-third of signatures come from Democrats and independents. That’s most likely a result of him being photographed at a party with high level donor’s and lobbyists at the French Laundry in Napa last year at the same time he was keeping the rest of California closed down. Hypocrisy thy name is Newsom.

Last week, Caitlyn Jenner announced he was joining the list of candidates running to replace Newsom.

In 2003, voters recalled Democratic Gov. Gray Davis and replaced him with actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Let’s not make that mistake again.
