Biden Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is weighing a vehicle miles tax (VMT) to fund the president’s estimated $3 trillion infrastructure plan, which he plans to unveil next Friday.
A VMT would tax people per miles driven and presents an alternative to further raising the gas tax.
“We’re obviously going to have to come to more solutions if we’re going to preserve the user-paid principle,” Buttigieg said Thursday of a potential VMT while testifying before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
His comment came in response to a question from Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Sam Graves, R-Mo., who has previously expressed support for the tax.

The film, which opens in North American theaters and on HBO Max on Wednesday, debuted in 38 overseas markets to an impressive $121.8 million, including $70.3 million in Chinese receipts. That’s the biggest debut for a Hollywood film in China since 2019. The monster smackdown also grossed $12.4 million on 891 IMAX screens, also Hollywood’s biggest IMAX weekend since December 2019.
The “Godzilla vs. Kong” debut outperformed the entire to-date international gross of the studio’s December blockbuster release of “Wonder Woman 1984,” which currently stands at $120 million overseas (and an additional $45.9 million domestic), according to estimates from measurement firm Comscore. The previous benchmark for a pandemic-era overseas opening was the $53-million launch of the studio’s “Tenet” in August 2020.

Sen. Ted Cruz shared video footage of a reported Biden staffer blocking him from recording in a migrant facility in his home state of Texas.

The footage was shown exclusively on Maria Bartiromo’s Fox News show, Sunday Morning Futures.

Oklahoma City police shot and killed an inmate at the Oklahoma County jail after a hostage situation Saturday night involving a guard.
The jail remained on lockdown Saturday night with extra staff inside, while outside, a small group of protesters chanted and pounded on the jail’s parking lot gate, loud enough to be heard a block away.
The man who was killed was not identified by officials, pending family notification. Officials said he was the suspected hostage taker.
The jail employee was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment. Jail Administrator Greg Williams said that the guard left the jail on his own, but did not provide details of his injuries.

Just over two weeks after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott lifted coronavirus mandates allowing businesses to operate at 100 percent capacity and made masks optional, the red state is still reporting decreases in cases and hospitalizations.
The governor championed his state’s success in a Friday night tweet saying, “Today Texas recorded the lowest 7-day COVID positivity rate since that data began being calculated: 5.43%.”
“We also recorded the largest daily number of vaccines administered to Texans: 342,849. More Texans getting vaccines will keep down the positivity rate,” he said, though adding that receiving the vaccine was “always voluntary.”
