President Donald Trump announced a federal takeover of Washington, DC’s police department and that around 800 National Guard troops would be deployed in DC. These actions happened as Trump pledged to crack down on crime in the nation’s capital, despite DC’s government, the FBI, and news sources reporting a decline in crime in recent years. The president has control of federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Park Police. Trump also said service members would be deployed to assist federal authorities and the National Guard “if necessary.” Moreover, Trump mentioned the possibility of “land-swapping” in regard to his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump was joined by Attorney General Pam Bondi, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, FBI Director Kash Patel, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro. 📍 The White House
