Web MD describes this as: Chemical Pneumonia Overview – Chemical pneumonia is an unusual type of lung irritation. Pneumonia usually is caused by a bacteria or virus. In chemical pneumonia, inflammation of lung tissue is from poisons or toxins. Only a small percentage of pneumonias are caused by chemicals.
I have actually had a case of this from something I was exposed to at work. It took me a couple weeks to figure out what was going on. So I figured out what was causing my cough and stopped it from getting worse and happening again. I then took some meds, steamy showers where I would breath in the steam for like 5 minutes coughing up stuff like mad. It is ok in the shower because you can just spit it out all over the place and rinse it away lol. Clean as a whistle.
I made sure anywhere else I worked I new the feelings in my lungs where things would start to irritate them. So I would do things to keep this stuff from going in my lungs. If it were a one or two time event I would hold my breath and turn my head away for the cleanest air using the exhaling air to push the chemicals in the air away as much as possible. That works for sure.
Long story short these types of lung damages take the longest to heal from. The inside of your lung could actually be burnt from the chemicals. You will eventually come back really well as long as you keep the exposure to a minimum and if you are exposed make sure you cough like mad in clean air to do what you can to get the contamination out.
